Best Drone Payloads for Inspection
The best drone payload for inspection depends on what you need to see: heat, fine visual detail, geometry or gas. For most utility, solar and building work, a radiometric thermal and zoom combination such as the Workswell WIRIS Enterprise or Gremsy VIO F1 is the right start. For survey-grade detail, the Phase One P5 leads, and for methane leaks an optical gas imaging (OGI) payload like Sierra-Olympia’s Ventus OGI is built for the job.
If you are designing your own payload, OEM modules such as the Teledyne FLIR Hadron 640R+ and Boson+ are the common building blocks.
Sourcing now shapes the shortlist as much as specs do. The FCC’s December 2025 Covered List action names sensors and cameras among UAS critical components, and DJI is covered separately. We note where each maker is based and any compliance claims it publishes.

Teledyne FLIR Hadron 640R+
The Hadron 640R+, released in March 2025, is a 56 g OEM module that pairs a radiometric 640×512 Boson+ thermal camera with a 64 MP visible camera. It outputs dual 60 Hz video over USB or MIPI, carries an IP54 rating and measures temperature at every thermal pixel. Teledyne FLIR describes it as NDAA compliant and ITAR free, and it is classified under ECCN 6A003.b.4. It works with Teledyne FLIR’s Prism embedded AI software. The earlier Hadron 640R remains widely integrated too.
Teledyne FLIR Boson+
Boson+ is an LWIR camera core with thermal sensitivity of 20 mK or better on a 12 µm 640×512 array, with a 320×256 option. It keeps the original Boson’s mechanical, electrical and optical interfaces, so it can drop into existing designs. A radiometric version launched in March 2025, and lens options run from wide to narrow fields of view. Teledyne FLIR describes the radiometric Boson+ as NDAA compliant and ITAR free.
Phase One P5
The Danish-made P5 has a 128 MP sensor with 3.45-micron pixels and 80 dB dynamic range and two metric-calibrated lenses: a 35 mm for coverage and an 80 mm for detail. It weighs about 620 to 690 g depending on the lens, and Phase One cites 0.5 cm accuracy in X, Y and Z. It was developed with Quantum Systems and Trimble, and Phase One states it is NDAA compliant and ITAR free.
Workswell WIRIS Enterprise
Workswell, based in the Czech Republic, builds the WIRIS Enterprise around a 640×512 LWIR sensor with a super-resolution mode of 1266×1010. It measures up to 1,500 °C with ±2% or ±2 °C accuracy, and adds a 16 MP wide camera, a 30x optical zoom camera and a laser rangefinder to 1,500 m. Thermal sensitivity is under 30 mK. It is rated IP66, comes in a dedicated gimbal version (WIRIS Enterprise G) and supports CAN, Ethernet, MAVLink and S.BUS for integration with professional drones.
Gremsy VIO F1
The VIO F1 from Vietnam-based Gremsy combines a 4K zoom camera (4.4 to 88.4 mm) with a 640×512 radiometric Teledyne FLIR thermal sensor at 50 mK or better and a laser rangefinder that reaches 2,400 m. It weighs 854 g and includes AI object detection and auto zoom. Gremsy describes it as NDAA compliant, and it is sold for Inspired Flight’s IF800 and IF1200. As with any payload built outside the U.S., ask for its FCC authorization and exemption status.
NextVision Raptor
NextVision, based in Raanana, Israel, makes stabilized day and night gimbals for small drones. The 640 g Raptor pairs a 1280×720 HD thermal sensor with a 40x optical EO zoom (80x with digital), plus 8x digital thermal zoom. It is built mainly for surveillance and target detection, so it suits inspection where you must keep a long distance from the asset. The smaller DragonEye2 weighs 125 g. U.S. buyers should confirm FCC status, as for any foreign-made payload.
Sierra-Olympia Ventus OGI
Sierra-Olympia, in Hood River, Oregon, builds the Ventus OGI around a cooled 640×512 MWIR detector with NETD under 50 mK. It images methane, butane, benzene and other gases. Freefly sells it for its Astro drone at 1,320 g with 25+ minutes of flight, lists it as NDAA compliant, and notes EPA OOOOa, OOOOb, OOOOc and Appendix K certification. It mounts with an Astro Isolator, and the kit is priced near $100,000.
YellowScan Voyager
YellowScan, in Saint-Clément-de-Rivière, France, makes the Voyager with a RIEGL VUX-120 scanner and an Applanix airborne-grade IMU. YellowScan cites precision under 1 cm, and the system is made in France. For programs that need NDAA compliance, YellowScan’s Venturer is the model it markets on that basis. The wider lineup includes the compact Mapper+, the Surveyor Ultra and the bathymetric Navigator, and a rental program launched in September 2026 lowers the entry cost.
DJI Zenmuse H30T
The H30T combines a 1280×1024 thermal camera measuring up to 1,600 °C, a 40 MP zoom camera with 34x optical zoom, a 48 MP wide camera, a laser rangefinder to 3,000 m and an NIR auxiliary light. It fits the Matrice 300 RTK, 350 RTK and 400. DJI’s equipment was added to the FCC Covered List under the FY2025 NDAA, and new DJI models cannot receive FCC authorization. Models authorized before that, and units already owned, can still be sold and used. In July 2026 the FCC also proposed rules targeting foreign “military-grade” equipment, including thermal and lidar, so check the current status before a fleet purchase.
Common questions
What is the best thermal camera for drone inspection?
For most inspection work, a radiometric 640×512 thermal sensor is the baseline, because it records a temperature value for every pixel. The WIRIS Enterprise and Gremsy VIO F1 are ready-made options. If you are building your own payload, the Teledyne FLIR Boson+ and Hadron 640R+ are common modules.
Can I still buy DJI inspection payloads in the U.S.?
Previously authorized DJI models can still be sold and used, according to the FCC’s December 2025 action. New DJI models cannot receive FCC equipment authorization. A July 2026 FCC proposal on foreign thermal, lidar and other “military-grade” equipment could change this, so confirm the current rule before you buy.
What payload do I need for methane leak detection?
You need an optical gas imaging (OGI) camera, usually a cooled mid-wave infrared sensor tuned to hydrocarbon absorption bands. The Sierra-Olympia Ventus OGI is one drone-ready example, and Freefly lists it with EPA OOOOa, OOOOb, OOOOc and Appendix K certification, which matters for regulated leak surveys. General-purpose inspection thermal cameras are not designed for this job.
Is lidar or photogrammetry better for infrastructure inspection?
Lidar measures geometry directly and can see through gaps in vegetation, which suits power lines and corridors. High-resolution photogrammetry, such as from a Phase One P5, gives rich visual detail and accurate models of exposed surfaces. Many teams use both, one for measurement and one for visual defects.
Getting a payload onto your own aircraft
Buying a payload is the easy part. Making it fly well on your own platform means gimbal tuning, power, compute and data links. If you need that work done, see our list of the best drone sensor integration companies, or read how Aerora Technology approaches payload and sensor integration as an ODM.
