9 Best Drone Mapping Software Platforms

The best drone mapping software for most teams is Pix4D or DroneDeploy for general work, Esri’s Site Scan for ArcGIS or ArcGIS Drone2Map for GIS-centered teams, and Propeller for earthworks. Agisoft Metashape, Bentley iTwin Capture Modeler and Epic’s RealityScan suit detailed 3D models, and WebODM is the leading open-source option.

All of them turn overlapping drone photos (and in several cases lidar) into orthomosaics, elevation models, point clouds and 3D meshes. They differ in where processing runs (desktop, cloud or your own server), which industries they are built around, and how they license. Several products were renamed in the last few years, so we used current names from each vendor.

01

Pix4D

Best for: surveyors and inspection teams who want a full photogrammetry suite.

Pix4D, a Swiss company founded as a spinoff of EPFL and part of the Parrot group, sells several tools. PIX4Dmatic handles large survey and corridor projects on the desktop, and now includes the former PIX4Dsurvey features in one license. PIX4Dmapper is the long-running desktop photogrammetry product. PIX4Dcloud adds online processing, sharing and site comparison over time, and PIX4Dfields is built for fast agriculture maps in the field. The range lets a team mix desktop and cloud work within one vendor.

02

DroneDeploy

Best for: construction, energy and industrial sites that capture data often.

DroneDeploy is a cloud reality capture platform that combines drone maps, 360-degree camera walks and ground-level scanning. It adds AI features for progress tracking, quality defect detection and safety risk review, and it recently launched Ground Pro for 3D records of floors, trenches and walls. The company reports more than 5,000 enterprise customers. Its strength is repeat capture across many sites, with data that project teams can open in a browser without photogrammetry training.

03

Site Scan for ArcGIS

Best for: organizations that already run ArcGIS Online or ArcGIS Enterprise.

Site Scan for ArcGIS is Esri’s cloud drone processing product, part of the ArcGIS Reality suite. Crews plan and fly missions with the ArcGIS Flight app, then process imagery in the cloud and share outputs as ArcGIS layers. That makes drone maps sit next to parcels, utility networks and asset records without extra conversion. It is a strong fit for public agencies and utilities with a GIS department and many pilots in the field.

04

ArcGIS Drone2Map

Best for: GIS analysts who need to process on a laptop, including offline.

ArcGIS Drone2Map is Esri’s desktop drone processing app. It produces true orthos, orthomosaics, surface and terrain models, point clouds and textured meshes from nadir and oblique images, and handles multispectral and thermal data. Projects open in ArcGIS Pro and publish to ArcGIS Online or Enterprise. Esri says Drone2Map 2026.1 introduces a Reality Mapping add-on license that covers both Drone2Map and ArcGIS Pro reality mapping, so check licensing before you renew.

05

Agisoft Metashape

Best for: users who want fine control over processing and high-detail 3D models.

Metashape is a stand-alone photogrammetry application from Agisoft, founded in 2006. It is widely used in GIS, cultural heritage documentation, visual effects and measurement work, and comes in Standard and Professional editions. Agisoft’s comparison page lists georeferenced surface and terrain models, orthomosaics and ground control support, so check which edition includes the mapping features you need. Agisoft lists its address in St. Petersburg, Russia, so government and defense buyers should check their procurement and sanctions rules before purchase.

06

Propeller

Best for: civil contractors, quarries and mines that measure volumes and grades.

Propeller is a cloud platform built around earthworks. Crews fly a site, and the platform returns a 3D survey that superintendents can measure for stockpile volumes, cut and fill, and design comparison. Propeller’s AeroPoints are smart ground control points that help deliver survey-grade accuracy without a full survey crew. Recent additions include handheld scanning, photogrammetry and lidar processing, and Propeller CAD for earthworks design. The company is based in Sydney with a U.S. office in Denver.

07

WebODM

Best for: budget-conscious teams, educators and anyone who wants to self-host.

WebODM is the web interface for the OpenDroneMap open-source project. It creates georeferenced maps, point clouds, elevation models, textured 3D models and Gaussian splats from drone photos. The code is licensed under AGPL-3.0, can run on your own hardware, and can send jobs to other processing nodes through NodeODM. Because processing stays on your servers, it suits teams with data-residency rules. Expect to spend more setup time than with commercial cloud tools.

08

Bentley iTwin Capture Modeler

Best for: engineering firms and owners building infrastructure digital twins.

iTwin Capture Modeler, formerly ContextCapture, is Bentley’s reality modeling software. It takes photos, video, lidar and point clouds and produces reality meshes, Gaussian splats, point clouds and orthophotos for design, construction and operations work. Processing can run on premises with iTwin Capture Engine or in the cloud with iTwin Capture Cloud Services. It fits engineering teams that already use Bentley tools for bridges, roads, rail and utilities, since the outputs feed directly into that design and asset workflow.

09

RealityScan

Best for: highly detailed 3D models and combined photo and lidar datasets.

RealityScan is Epic Games’ desktop photogrammetry software, renamed from RealityCapture with the 2.0 release in June 2025. Version 2.0 added AI-based masking, aerial lidar support and visual tools for checking scan quality, and version 2.1 in November 2025 added support for SLAM scanner data. It is a strong choice for heritage, visual effects and detailed asset models, where a photoreal 3D result matters more than GIS integration. Check Epic’s current license terms for commercial use.

FAQ

Common questions

What is the best free drone mapping software?

WebODM, from the OpenDroneMap project, is the best-known free and open-source choice. It produces orthomosaics, elevation models, point clouds and 3D models, and you can run it on your own computer or server. It needs more setup than paid cloud tools.

Is cloud or desktop processing better for drone mapping?

Cloud tools such as DroneDeploy, Site Scan for ArcGIS, Propeller and PIX4Dcloud are easier to share and need no powerful computer. Desktop tools such as PIX4Dmatic, Drone2Map, Metashape and RealityScan give more control, work offline and keep data local, which matters for sensitive sites.

Which drone mapping software works with lidar?

Several do. Propeller processes lidar surveys, Bentley iTwin Capture Modeler accepts lidar and point clouds, and RealityScan 2.0 added aerial lidar support. Lidar workflows vary by sensor, so check each vendor’s list of supported sensors and file formats, and ask for a sample dataset run before you buy.

Do I need ground control points for drone mapping?

For survey-grade accuracy, yes, or an RTK or PPK drone plus independent check points to prove the result. Propeller’s AeroPoints are one example of smart ground control built for this. For visual inspections, progress photos or rough volumes, many teams work without them.

Better data starts at the payload

Software can only work with the images it gets, so camera quality, gimbal stability and accurate geotags set the ceiling on map accuracy. If you are building mapping payloads (RGB, oblique, multispectral or lidar), Aerora’s gimbal camera payloads show one approach, and our list of drone design and manufacturing companies in Silicon Valley covers other partners.
