Best Drone Batteries: Chemistries and Vendors Compared
The best drone battery is the one whose chemistry fits your mission and whose cells come from a source your customers can accept. For endurance, silicon-anode cells from Amprius and lithium-sulfur cells from Lyten are the most promising U.S.-developed options, while established pack builders such as MaxAmps, EaglePicher, Epsilor and Denchi cover proven lithium-ion and lithium-polymer designs.
Where a battery is made has become a buying criterion in its own right. The FY2024 NDAA (Section 154) bars the Department of Defense from buying batteries produced by six named Chinese companies, including CATL and BYD, from 1 October 2027. The FCC’s December 2025 Covered List determination also lists batteries and battery management systems among UAS critical components.
Battery chemistries in brief
- Lithium polymer (LiPo): pouch cells with high discharge rates, the default for most multirotors and FPV aircraft.
- Lithium-ion (18650, 21700 and pouch): usually higher energy density than LiPo at lower burst current, suited to long-endurance and fixed-wing flight.
- Lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4): heavier for the same energy but more thermally stable, with long cycle life, so it fits where safety and cycle count outweigh weight.
- Silicon anode: replaces some or all graphite in the anode to raise energy density, as in Amprius SiCore.
- Lithium-sulfur (Li-S): very light, and Lyten’s version uses no nickel, manganese, cobalt or graphite.
- Semi-solid state: a partly solid electrolyte for higher energy density, offered by Tattu among others.
- Primary (non-rechargeable): single-use chemistries such as EaglePicher’s Li/CFx-MnO2 for expendable or long-duration missions.

Amprius Technologies
Amprius, headquartered in Fremont, California, makes SiCore silicon-anode lithium-ion cells in pouch, cylindrical and prismatic formats. Its Fremont site runs an R&D lab and a MWh-scale pilot line. Most volume comes from contract manufacturers: its Korea Battery Alliance, including TM Top Material, JR Energy Solution and Libest, builds cells to Amprius specs, and Amprius says it delivered its first NDAA-compliant cells from South Korea in September 2025. In February 2026 it partnered with Nanotech Energy for U.S. production of its SA128 cell (6.8 Ah, 320 Wh/kg). It dropped plans for a Colorado gigafactory.
Lyten
Lyten, in San Jose, California, makes lithium-sulfur batteries that it says are up to 40% lighter than equivalent lithium-ion cells and 60% lighter than LFP. Its cells use no nickel, manganese, cobalt or graphite. Lyten produces in San Jose and acquired Northvolt’s battery plant in San Leandro, California, to scale U.S. output. In May 2025 it launched a drone propulsion initiative and said it was taking orders for its drone battery.
MaxAmps
MaxAmps, established in 2004, assembles every pack at its Spokane, Washington facility and hand-checks each one several times during the build. It offers LiPo, Li-ion and LFP-Max (LiFePO4) packs in custom configurations, holds ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 certification, and expanded its military drone battery production in 2025. Its site does not say where its cells are made, so ask for cell origin in writing if you need NDAA or Buy American documentation.
EaglePicher Technologies
EaglePicher, headquartered in Joplin, Missouri, is an American-owned battery maker with several manufacturing sites in the Joplin area. It entered the battery market in 1922, and one of its batteries flew on NASA’s Explorer 1 satellite in 1958. It has supplied lithium-ion batteries for the RQ-4 Global Hawk, the Aurora Excalibur VTOL and the Northrop Grumman X-47B demonstrator. For single-use missions it offers Li/CFx-MnO2 primary batteries, built for low weight and long run time.
KULR Technology Group
KULR, based in Houston, announced a joint development collaboration with Texas-based agricultural drone maker Hylio in February 2026. The two will design, prototype, qualify and manufacture NDAA-compliant battery systems in Texas, evaluating several chemistries and pack designs, with engineering, integration and manufacturing centered in Texas. KULR also markets a KULR ONE Air product line for drones. Treat the Hylio program as in development and ask for qualification timelines.
Epsilor
Epsilor, a subsidiary of Arotech Corporation, designs and makes smart batteries, chargers and communication systems for defense. It runs R&D and manufacturing facilities in Dimona and Beit Shemesh, Israel, and works with lithium-ion and lithium-polymer chemistries across defense, marine, aerospace and industrial markets, including unmanned systems. The company traces back to a merger of the original Epsilor with Electric Fuel, which began with zinc-air cells in the early 1990s.
Denchi
Denchi, formerly ABSL Power Solutions, manufactures and tests batteries at its facility in Thurso, Scotland, for unmanned air, land and sea systems. Its range spans rechargeable lithium-ion (NMC, NCA and LiFePO4), nickel-based and lead-acid types, plus primary chemistries such as lithium manganese dioxide and lithium thionyl chloride. Its Sparrowhawk UAV batteries power electronic payloads and provide emergency power to the controls if the main engine fails, with internal heating, health monitoring and protection against over-charge, over- and under-voltage and over-temperature.
Tattu (Grepow)
Tattu is the drone battery brand of Shenzhen Grepow Battery Co., founded in 2013, with subsidiaries in China, the United States and Germany. It sells LiPo and smart packs for industrial drones and FPV racing, plus semi-solid-state packs that Tattu says reach up to 400 Wh/kg and over 1,100 cycles. Because Tattu is a Chinese brand, U.S. buyers should check NDAA sourcing requirements and how the FCC’s December 2025 determination applies before specifying it.
Common questions
What is the best battery chemistry for long drone flights?
For long endurance, energy density matters most, so high-energy lithium-ion, silicon-anode and lithium-sulfur cells lead. LiPo remains the standard where high burst current matters, such as heavy-lift multirotors. Match the chemistry to your peak current, temperature range and cycle life, not only to watt-hours per kilogram.
Do drone batteries need to be NDAA compliant?
For U.S. government-funded programs, yes, and the rules are tightening. The FY2024 NDAA bars DoD purchases of batteries produced by six named Chinese companies from 1 October 2027. Commercial buyers are not bound by that rule, but many enterprise customers now ask for NDAA documentation anyway.
Does the FCC Covered List apply to drone batteries?
The FCC’s December 2025 determination lists batteries and battery management systems among UAS critical components. Batteries have not traditionally fallen under FCC equipment authorization, so how the rule applies to a plain pack versus a smart pack with electronics is not settled. Ask your vendor and counsel how they read it for your product.
Are U.S.-assembled battery packs made with U.S. cells?
Not necessarily. Many packs are assembled domestically from imported cells. If you need NDAA or Buy American documentation, ask for the cell maker, cell country of origin and the pack’s domestic content percentage, and get it in writing. For defense work, also confirm the cell maker is not one of the six companies named in Section 154.
Designing power into your platform
Batteries interact with motors, ESCs and airframe weight, so the best pack is often a custom one designed alongside propulsion. For partners who can design the full aircraft, see our list of the best custom drone platform developers. Aerora Technology, for example, designs custom packs in LiPo, Li-ion, LiFePO4, 18650 and pouch formats with in-house cell-level and pack-level testing.
